BLOOMVILLE Crime Prevention Officer Ron Craig plans to work out arrangements to acquire a replacement vehicle for the program, Clerk/Treasurer Janis Weasner said Thursday.
Weasner said Craig works for MedCorp, and said he informed Bloomville Village Council Wednesday night of plans to forgo his cost-of-living increases with the private employer in exchange for MedCorp supplying a 1998 Chevy Blazer to the crime prevention program.
MedCorp originally donated the current van, and would reacquire it under the swap. The van has developed mechanical issues, and the village chose not to invest funds to recondition it, Weasner said.
"He (Craig) explained that he drives the vehicle to Columbus for his required crime prevention training," she said. "The transmission is slipping and it has suspension problems, and he's no longer comfortable with driving it to Columbus, so he's been driving his personal vehicle."
Weasner said Craig conducts a bicycle safety program each year for Bloomville children, plus child safety classes and fingerprinting efforts, and is the only officer on the local force who receives no compensation.
To satisfy audit requirements, the village plans to sell the current van to MedCorp for $100 while paying $100 for the Blazer, with Craig making the necessary accommodations with his employer to facilitate the transfer.
"Basically, we would be trading checks to satisfy the auditor," Weasner said.
In other matters, the village is looking ahead to having Beeghly Park swimming pool in shape to open for the summer, with purchase of rubber expansion joint sealer, and plans to examine rates and operating expenses as the new season approaches.
Weasner said the village is awaiting payment for two ball tournaments at Beeghly Field in 2009.
